Put your stick butter or margarine into the inside tube and fill the outside piece 1/3 full of cold water.  Insert the inner tube into the water base and you will have spreadable butter or margarine all of the time.  Change the water once a week.  If you are going away for a few days and the house will be warm, put the butter keeper in the refrigerator.
